Art Room Thursdays – 1.5 Million Butterflies

Back in October the kids in my grade 1-3 class and my 4-6 class made butterflies for the 1.5 million butterflies project for the Holocaust Museum in Houston. I don’t think any of my students knew almost anything about the Holocaust, some of them knew about the World War from video games they’ve played or books they’ve read but the didn’t know about all the children and adults who died.

Because of their ages I did not want to explain more than their parents would want them to know. The Museum website had some great tips for talking to young children about the holocaust and that helped. We talked about how Hitler was bad and did bad things to the Jewish people and that a lot of people died because of it.

The kids were pretty excited that their butterflies represented these children.
